A blow for many Togolese citizens: the United States has announced the temporary suspension of visa issuance to several categories of Togolese nationalsaccording to an official press release issued on Monday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Togolese Living Abroad.
The measure, which came into force on June 9, 2025 particularly concerns visas B-1/B-2 (business, tourism, medical care), the study and exchange visas (F, M and J), as well as all immigration visas. The cause: a high rate of overstay among certain Togolese visa holders, i.e. people who have overstayed their visas in the United States.
Targeted exceptions
Despite the apparent rigour of this measure, several categories of people remain exempt restrictions :
- Holders of diplomatic and official visas ;
- Spouses, children and parents of U.S. citizens (family reunification);
- Togolese children being adopted by American families;
- Visit legal permanent residents (green card) ;
- Former U.S. government employees on special visas;
- Visit binationals using a passport not concerned ;
- And some accredited participants at international sporting events.
A call for collective responsibility
In its press release, the Togolese ministry reminds us emphatically the importance for citizens of scrupulously respect the rules of residence abroad. It emphasizes that individual failings can lead to major collective consequencesas demonstrated by this decision.
The Togolese government claims to be following ollowing developments and remain in dialogue with the American authorities in order to reach a rapid normalization procedures for entering the United States.
