Togo is gearing up for the start of a rainy season marked by a shortfall of rainfall in the south of the country. According to forecasts unveiled on March 14 by the National Meteorological Agency (ANAMET), this situation should gradually improve over the coming months, returning to normal.
Between March and May, rainfall will be below normal averages in the southern Maritime and northern Central regions. By contrast, the Plateaux and Savanes regions will experience normal to surplus rainfall. From a hydrological point of view, the lower Mono basin will be subject to excess water, while the Lac basin will oscillate between normal and excess.
In view of these conditions, ANAMET advises farmers to favor short-cycle crops that are resistant to water stress. People are also urged to avoid flood-prone areas to limit the risks.
"We will ensure regular monitoring with updates to refine daily and intra-seasonal forecasts", reassured Issaou Latifou, ANAMET's Managing Director. Increased vigilance is therefore called for to anticipate the impacts of this capricious weather.
