In Togo, the Automated Marking System (SAM), introduced in 2020, has generated 35.8 billion FCFA in five years, thanks to the tracking of over 2 billion products involving 600 economic operators.
This system, designed to combat fraud and improve traceability, currently covers products such as beverages, tobacco and wines. Between 2022 and 2024, the scheme will collect more than 5 billion FCFA from the beer sector.
In view of this success, the authorities intend to extend the marking to other products such as sugar, oils, cement, fertilizers and fuel. The aim is to increase the transparency of commercial channels and better protect consumers.
In addition, a product authenticity verification application was launched in 2024 by the Togolese Revenue Office (OTR), supporting this drive to combat counterfeiting.
