Togo is about to officially join the pan-African Great Green Wall initiative, an ambitious environmental project to restore 100 million hectares of degraded land from Senegal to Djibouti.
The announcement was reaffirmed in Lomé on May 28, 2025, at a meeting between Environment Minister Foli Bazi Katari and Juan Carlos Vasquez, representative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
According to the latter, Togo's membership procedure is in its final stages, pending a ministerial meeting and summit of heads of state scheduled for the end of 2025 for formalization.
Faced with desertification and soil erosion, Togo sees this initiative as a strategic lever for strengthening its climate adaptation and promoting sustainable rural development. UNEP has also reaffirmed its technical and financial support to the country in setting up a national land restoration program.
