Togo is making remarkable progress in primary education, with a gross enrolment rate reaching 132.5 % in 2022, compared with 122.4 % in 2018. This progress is the result of reforms undertaken by the government, notably the introduction of free tuition in public elementary school, facilitating enrolment of children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The national school feeding program has also played a key role, with 218,395 pupils benefiting from free meals in 2022-2023, reducing the dropout rate, especially in rural areas. At the same time, a vast infrastructure plan has enabled the construction of 1,035 classrooms between 2022 and 2023, followed by 2,000 new classrooms in 2024, improving learning conditions.
These combined efforts reflect Togo's commitment to ensuring inclusive and accessible education, boosting school attendance, particularly for girls. The completion rate of 88.7 % testifies to the success of this ambitious education policy.
