Togo's agricultural sector receives a boost from Japan. On Thursday May 30, the Minister of Agriculture, Lekpa Gbegbeni, and the Japanese Ambassador to Togo, Katsuya Ikkatai, signed an agreement for a grant estimated at 1.2 billion FCFA to support agricultural productivity.

The donation, which forms part of the economic and social development program of the Land of the Rising Sun, will enable Togo to acquire agricultural equipment (bulldozers, excavators and tractors) with a view to increasing national production.

In concrete terms, the funding will be used to improve yields through land development and floodwater drainage. The aim is to promote rice-growing and support the agricultural activities of vulnerable producers.

"This donation from Japan effectively supports the government's committed efforts to strengthen the resilience and capacities of agricultural producers," said the Minister.

Last February, Togo received over 3,500 tonnes of rice from Japan as part of the Kennedy Round project.
