Togo has taken a decisive step towards consolidating its democratic institutions. On Wednesday March 5, 2025, the President of the Republic, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, appointed 20 new senators, thus completing the establishment of the second chamber of Parliament.

So gender equality is fully respected, with 10 women and 10 men joining the 41 elected in the recent senatorial elections.

A strong signal for the inclusion of women in politics

As the world prepares to celebrate International Women's Rights Day, this appointment resonates as a concrete commitment to women's participation in the highest decision-making bodies. The new senators include personalities from a wide range of backgrounds, illustrating the desire for a Senate that is representative of the country's dynamic forces.

A diverse and balanced Senate

Beyond parity, this new composition reflects several key dynamics:

  1. An inclusive, participatory vision The Head of State reaffirms his desire for a Togo where every citizen, regardless of political affiliation or gender, can contribute to national edification.
  2. Assumed political pluralism : Appointing figures from the opposition guarantees a diversity of opinions within the Senate, thus strengthening democratic debate.
  3. Recognition of the role of women : This female representation, in line with the country's commitments to gender equality, is a significant step forward in national governance.
  4. Fast, structured implementation The appointment of senators before the opening of the legal session reflects the President of the Republic's concern to ensure the smooth running of the institutions.
  5. A multi-skilled Senate The new members, drawn from various sectors and regions of the country, bring a wealth of experience and know-how to the table, ensuring effective legislative action.

A turning point for the Vᵉ Republic
