The Togolese government warns: from now on, no water, beer, juice, wine, alcohol or tobacco product may be manufactured, imported or sold on the territory without a secure fiscal marking. This requirement, introduced by an order in 2017, was reiterated this Tuesday, January 12, in a joint press release from the Ministries of Commerce and Economy.
The measure is designed to protect consumers from counterfeit products and effectively combat illicit trade. The authorities are therefore inviting all those involved, both local and importers, to comply immediately by affixing the tax mark to each product.
"From this date onwards, any product not marked at origin, or offered for sale without the required marking, will be considered as originating from the black market and will be confiscated", warned government officials Ms Mivedor-Sambiani and Mr Georges Barcola. The press release also states that regular checks will be carried out, both at customs and within the country, to ensure compliance with these regulations.
As part of this operation, the government is inviting the public to report any infringements via the toll-free numbers provided (8585 and 8280). In addition, the Office Togolais des Recettes (OTR) has recently developed an application enabling consumers to check the authenticity of products in real time, an essential tool for enhancing the transparency and security of purchases.
By strengthening product traceability and equalizing requirements for local and imported products, Togo hopes to create a secure product traceability environment.
