Sokodé, Togo's second-largest city, is about to change its face. The President of the Republic, Faure Gnassingbé, launched the construction of the bypass road around this strategic city in the Central region of Togo on Thursday January 16, 2025, in Kpario.
This ambitious project, the fruit of collaboration between Togo and JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), bears witness to the government's determination to stimulate regional development through modern, appropriate infrastructure.
With total funding of 24.5 billion FCFA, including 82% provided by JICA, the project involves the construction of a 16-kilometer asphalt road, subdivided into two sections: Tchalo-Kpario (12.7 km) and Kpario -Kidèoudè (3.3 km). Sanitation and crossing infrastructures will reinforce this strategic axis, designed to relieve congestion in downtown Sokodé and improve traffic flow within the region.
In addition to this major bypass, the Central region benefits from a wider road modernization plan, including the upgrading of the RN14 (Sokodé-Tchamba-Kambolé to the Benin border, 86 km), the rehabilitation of the RN17 (Sokodé-Bassar with bypasses of the Malfakassa mountains and a ramp to Bianaparba) and the improvement of the RN1 (Aouda-Alléhéridè).
This project is part of a wider vision to boost the competitiveness of road corridors dependent on hinterland countries. By relieving congestion in urban areas and facilitating travel, the government intends to stimulate trade, accelerate local development and improve people's daily lives.
Located 338 km from Lomé, Sokodé, a crossroads city and nerve center, is thus positioned as a key driver for the Togolese economy. This major project marks a decisive step in the region's transformation and symbolizes a strong commitment to Togo's emergence.
