The first-ever Total Energies CAN coaches' symposium, held in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, from September 12 to 13, 2024, was a complete success.
This pioneering two-day conference marked a milestone in African soccer, as the continent's top coaches and experts gathered to share their views on the successes of the highly successful Total Energies 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and their aspirations for future triumphs.
To mark the occasion, the African soccer body made a donation to the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF). CAF's donation to FIF is a cheque for eight billion FCFA. This amount comes from the "Legacy fund".
It enables the continental umbrella organization to transfer part of the funds generated by the African Cup of Nations (CAN) to the host member association. As FIF is the organizer of the 34th edition of the CAN, it is the beneficiary of this fund.
In total, FIF President Yacine Idriss Diallo received a cheque for 14,210,584 US dollars (8,438,713,070 FCFA) from CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
This amount represents 20 % of the CAN 2023 revenues.
According to the head of the African soccer umbrella organization, this fund is to be used in specific areas of Ivorian soccer.
Patrice Motsepe emphasized the development of youth and women's soccer.
In Côte d'Ivoire, both categories of soccer, and soccer in particular, are struggling to get off the ground. With little media coverage, it suffers from a lack of funding.
Only a handful of Ivorian players have professional contracts, most of them with clubs abroad.
Most of those competing in national competitions have to make do with amateur status.
It is to be hoped, therefore, that with this gift from CAF to FIF, things will get moving for these two categories.
