Launched in March 2024 by the Togolese government, the national program to build 21 mixed modular bridges, designed to speed up the opening up of rural areas, is making good progress. To date, work has reached a physical completion rate of 44.9 %, according to a recent announcement by the Ministry in charge of opening up and rural roads.
Led by the French group Matière, in collaboration with local engineers and technicians, this ambitious project aims to erect 21 Unibridge-type modular bridges in 17 of the country's prefectures, including 7 in the East Mono region. These structures, designed as steel box girder bridges or mixed steel-concrete structures, are assembled and erected on site within an optimized timeframe. Among them, the emblematic Ogou-Kolidè bridge, symbolically launched by President Faure Gnassingbé, stands out as the most imposing in this program, with a 120-metre span across the Ogou River.
Beyond the technical aspects, this program is part of a dynamic of socio-economic transformation of the rural environment. By facilitating access to essential services and opening up routes to market for agricultural produce, these infrastructures will play a key role in improving living conditions for local populations. This project adds to the efforts already made since 2020, with over 1,900 kilometers of rural tracks opened or rehabilitated each year.
The modular bridge program thus symbolizes a clear desire to bring rural communities closer together, stimulate economic exchanges and lay the foundations for inclusive, sustainable development in Togo.
