The Senegalese government has decided to compensate families who lost a loved one during the political violence between 2021 and 2024, with a sum of 10 million FCFA (around 15,300 euros) per death.
In addition to this financial compensation, these families will benefit from care for their minor children, health coverage, and social and health assistance programs.
A total of 79 people have been officially declared dead as a result of the violence, and over 2,000 ex-prisoners and victims will also receive a lump sum of 500,000 FCFA (769 euros). The government had previously announced a budget of five billion FCFA (7.6 million euros) to compensate the victims, without specifying how it would be distributed.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko announced his intention to repeal an amnesty law that covered violent events, a law originally passed under former President Macky Sall. The latter, whose candidacy for a third term in office sparked intense tensions, was at the heart of the unrest that shook the country, exacerbated by accusations levelled against Sonko.
These measures are designed to ease social and political tensions in the run-up to the March 2024 presidential elections, while addressing the needs of families affected by these tragedies.
