In an exclusive interview with Vox Africa's Rendez-vous avec l'Afrique program, hosted by Jules Domche, Robert Dussey, Togo's Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed a clear and engaging position on the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES). With carefully considered words, he revealed Togo's strategic and political interest in this young regional organization.
"For us, today, President Assimi Goïta is an opportunity for Mali," asserted Robert Dussey, underlining the importance of Mali's leadership in this emerging alliance. In his view, the ESA represents a historic opportunity for the African states of the region to create a strong, united voice, resolutely focused on strategic autonomy and sovereignty.
The Minister also emphasized the popular support that would be generated by Togo's eventual membership of the ESA. "The Togolese, I can assure you, would say yes without hesitation to the idea of ESA membership. It's a project that speaks to our deepest aspirations as Africans", he confided, pointing out that this alliance embodies values of self-determination and regional cooperation that resonate with Togo's pan-Africanist ambitions.
This declaration comes at a time when the ESA, created by Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, is seeking to strengthen its diplomatic and economic base. Robert Dussey hailed the initiative as a bold and promising response to the security and political challenges facing the Sahel region, capable of redefining the balance of power in West Africa.
By publicly supporting the ESA, Togo appears to be asserting its role as a key partner in the dynamics of regional integration, while reiterating its willingness to be associated with African solutions to African problems. The Minister's words reflect an ambitious and proactive vision of Togolese diplomacy, in line with the aspirations of the continent's populations for greater sovereignty and independence from outside influences.
Robert Dussey's outburst once again confirms his role as a spokesman for Togo's pan-African ambitions, while laying the foundations for a national debate on the country's integration into the ESA. It remains to be seen whether these ambitions will be translated into political action in the near future.
