A dramatic traffic accident occurred this Friday, December 13, 2024, at around 2 p.m., on Route Nationale N°1, at Agoè-Zongo, in Lomé. A semi-trailer truck carrying an oversized gas tank collided with the Agoè-Zongo pedestrian bridge, causing the upper platform to collapse.
According to the official press release from the Minister of Security and Civil Protection, this The collapse had disastrous consequences: the platform crushed the truck itself, a car and two tricycles carrying passengers. The provisional death toll at the scene was eight, with three seriously injured being rushed to hospital.
Faced with the scale of the tragedy, the Minister of Security immediately activated the ORSEC plan. This initiative mobilized the Togolese Armed Forces, the emergency services (fire department and ANPC), the Togolese Red Cross, as well as local residents to help the victims and restore traffic flow.
The Minister, Ambassador Calixte Batossie Madjoulba, offered his condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. He also praised the exemplary solidarity and collaboration of all those involved in the rescue operations.
As a reminder, the Minister stressed the importance of complying with loading rules, in particular those laid down in WAEMU regulation 14, as well as with the provisions of the Highway Code. He urged road users to exercise caution to prevent such tragedies in the future.
This accident, which caused considerable material damage, is a reminder of the urgent need for increased vigilance on Togolese roads to guarantee the safety of all.
