Faced with the alarming resurgence of road accidents in Togo, the Martin Luther King Movement (MMLK) is sounding the alarm and calling for the urgent holding of a general assembly on road transport.
A hecatomb on the roads
The last quarter of 2024 and the beginning of 2025 were marked by a series of fatal accidents, causing numerous fatalities and serious injuries. With deteriorating infrastructure, irresponsible driver behavior and a lack of rigorous controls, Togo's roads have become a real hazard for road users.
A call to action from the authorities
According to the MMLK, inaction on the part of public authorities is aggravating the situation. The organization points the finger at the passivity of the authorities in charge of transport and demands concrete measures to curb this scourge. The movement's proposals include tighter roadside checks, tougher penalties for infringements, improved infrastructure and better driver training.
Estates General for sustainable solutions
The MMLK is calling for a national consultation involving all stakeholders - government, transport operators, law enforcement agencies and civil society - to identify the root causes of road insecurity and find appropriate solutions.
For the MMLK, it is imperative to act without delay to save lives and create a safer traffic environment for all.
