Supporters of Bassirou Diomaye Faye were jubilant all night as the first results of Sunday's presidential election in Senegal were announced.
On Sunday evening, a jubilant crowd stormed the headquarters of the DIOMAYE PRÉSIDENT coalition to express their joy, even before the results were officially announced. They were far from imagining a second round in these elections. They celebrated well into the night. The early results were enough for Bassirou Diomaye's supporters to celebrate the Senegalese opposition leader's victory in Sunday's presidential election.
Bassirou Diomaye Faye, chosen to replace Ousmane Sonko under sentence, is meeting with the support of several hundred thousand people in the streets of Dakar and throughout the country, according to Africanews' correspondent in Senegal.
"I've come here to appeal to Amadou Ba to call the president-elect, the president elected by the Senegalese people in the first round by an overwhelming majority, Bassirou Diomaye Faye. To call him in the great Senegalese tradition, in the great republican tradition, because it's irreversible: Bassirou Diomaye Faye is elected President of the Republic."
Says Nafissatou Diallo, of Diomaye's allied PDS party.
In any case, initial trends give Bassirou Diomaye Faye a large lead. But they only concern a third of the ballots counted, according to the electoral commission.
Several other candidates have already congratulated the opposition candidate, but not yet the incumbent Amadou Ba, whose supporters are already talking about a second round. Bassirou Diomaye Faye's supporters refuse to accept this.
