Lomé's Gnassingbé Eyadema International Airport (AIGE), modernized in 2016, is about to undergo a new phase of expansion. This ambitious project was at the center of discussions in the National Assembly during consideration of the 2025 Finance Act in December 2024.
The aim of this expansion is to boost the airport's capacity and support the Togolese authorities' vision of turning the country into a true regional logistics hub. In particular, the expansion will see the addition of 500 new seats in the airport's waiting areas, to facilitate passenger traffic at every stage of their journey: departure, connection and arrival.
The project also aims to increase annual passenger numbers from 1.4 million to 2 million, while modernizing the terminal. A development to the south is planned to improve safety and compliance with international standards.
In a broader context, the airport extension is part of a drive to modernize the hub, with the construction of a hotel for transit passengers. The project will make Lomé even more attractive to international airlines, a dozen of which already fly to the Togolese capital.
This development could attract new carriers, consolidating Togo's position in the West African airspace.
