On the night of June 5 to 6, 2025, the Togolese capital was the scene of spontaneous, undeclared demonstrations, leading to road blockades and scuffles in several Lomé neighborhoods. These movements, orchestrated remotely by groups based abroad, were aimed at destabilizing republican institutions, according to an official press release issued by the Lomé public prosecutor's office on June 9, 2025.

The forces of law and order had to intervene to restore public order in the face of illegal actions constituting aggravated disturbances, as stipulated by the new penal code. Several dozen demonstrators were arrested during police operations.

However, following an investigation, the Public Prosecutor's Office decided to release a large number of those arrested. A total of 56 individuals were released, some on charges deemed to be minor, others after a reminder of the law in view of the circumstances. A number of suspects remain in police custody as proceedings continue.

This decision underlines the determination of the Togolese authorities to reconcile firmness in the face of destabilizing acts with respect for rights, and calls on the population to avoid any action contrary to the legal framework of peaceful demonstration.
