The Programme d'Urgence pour la Région des Savanes (PURS), launched by the government to improve living conditions for vulnerable populations in northern Togo, reports remarkable progress in several key sectors.
The region's governor, Affoh Atcha-Dédji, recently presented the results achieved over the past two years. In terms of electrification, the rate has risen from 29 % in 2021 to 42 % in 2023, with over 15,000 households connected.
In the drinking water sector, nearly 80,000 new people now have access to water infrastructure, boosting the rural coverage rate from 64 % to 73.5 %.
Agriculture, the mainstay of the regional economy, also featured in the program, with the development of 1,000 hectares of lowlands and the distribution of 21,000 tonnes of fertilizer. In addition, 542 agricultural operators received subsidies for the acquisition of equipment, boosting their competitiveness.
These advances, described as "tangible and already visible" by the governor, testify to the positive impact of the PURS on the resilience of local communities. Special recognition was given to the army for its crucial role in securing the area.
