Since 1977, Togo has celebrated National Tree Day every June 1. This year, the tradition was once again respected, with the planting of several seedlings by the local population and the country's highest authorities.

At the University of Lomé, under the leadership of the institution's president, Professor Adama Mawulé Kpodar, and in the presence of the vice-presidents, Professors Komlan Batawila and Kafui Kpeba, the university community planted 500 seedlings early this morning along the fence adjacent to Boulevard Gnassingbé Eyadema.

The species planted this year include Afzelia africana (Lingué), Khaya senegalensis (Mawogene), Erythrophleum suaveolens, Albizia chevalleri and Tamarindus indica. In order to ensure the proper care of the plants planted, a monitoring plan drawn up by the Jardin Zoologique et Botanique of the Faculty of Science at the University of Lomé has been approved by the university authorities.

Year after year, the University of Lomé demonstrates its commitment to the government's ambition to increase the country's forest cover by 25% by 2025, and to plant one billion trees by 2030.
