June 1, 2024 - Under a radiant sun, the 46th edition of the National Tree Day took place in the commune of Golfe 7, marking a new stage in the government's ambitious plan to plant a billion trees by 2030. This flagship event, under the theme "Forests and innovations: new solutions for a better world", brought together a host of players determined to set Togo on the path to a greener, more sustainable future.
More than 20 million seedlings have been made available nationwide, free of charge, to anyone wishing to get involved in this ecological adventure. And the results are in: more than 250 seedlings of different varieties - Kaya Senegalensis, mango trees, orange trees, oil palms, badamiers, goyaviers - were planted on Saturday June 1, 2024 in the commune of Golfe 7 by an army of volunteers made up of municipal councillors, municipal agents, traditional chiefs, law enforcement and security forces, media representatives, NGOs and committed associations.
"Today, we are celebrating not only National Tree Day, but also our collective commitment to transforming our landscape into a veritable oasis of greenery," said the Secretary General of the Golfe 7 commune, Mr DEGBEY Kodzo. "It's a civic initiative that transcends divisions and mobilizes the entire Togolese population, from the authorities to ordinary citizens, civil society and young people", he continued.
For the Mayor's Chief of Staff, Mr. SEHONOU Komi, the most important thing is not just planting, but maintaining and preserving these young shoots.
"We all need to get involved to make this National Tree Day a real driver of ecological transformation, in the service of a greener, more resilient Togo," he hammered.
With this unprecedented mobilization, the commune of Golfe 7 is leading the way, inspiring hope and determination to achieve the ambitious goal of planting a billion trees by 2030. An ecological challenge which, if met, will reshape the face of Togo and provide its citizens with a healthier environment, more conducive to the development of all.
