Exactly one year ago, ECOWAS threatened Niger with imminent military intervention to restore Bazoum to power.
Time passes, seasons change, but some promises seem frozen in time. Exactly one year ago, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) announced its determination to intervene militarily in Niger to restore Mohamed Bazoum to the presidency.
Threats to prosecute President Bazoum for "high treason" constitute a new "provocation" by the military authorities in Niamey, has denounced the Community of West African States (Cédéao).
This threat is "a new form of provocation and contradicts the desire expressed by the military authorities of the Republic of Niger to re-establish constitutional order by peaceful means", according to the press release signed in Abuja.
One year on, we have to admit that this intervention, promised as imminent, has still not seen the light of day. Should we laugh or cry?
