On November 20, 2024, on the occasion of the International Children's Rights Day, the Home for Children in Difficulty (MAED), with the support of its partners La Ligue Togolaise pour la Protection de l'Enfance (LTPE) and Evit Bugale ar Bed (EBB), organized a landmark event to raise awareness among children of the need to protect their fundamental rights.

Under the theme "Let's listen to the future, let's protect children's rights", the day was held in a festive and educational setting on the esplanade of the Maison d'Accueil in Lomé.

A day of solidarity and education

International Children's Rights Day commemorates the adoption by the United Nations of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989, and every year serves as a reminder of the importance of guaranteeing every child a living environment that respects his or her rights. This year's event brought together 300 children.

Through a series of educational games and interactive discussions, the children were made aware of their fundamental rights, including the right to education, the right to health, the right to protection, and the right to expression. The event also encouraged children to actively listen to others, thereby involving them in the decision-making process.

The main aim of this initiative was to raise children's awareness of the need to protect their rights, but also to strengthen their ability to defend their rights themselves. The day also aimed to promote collective awareness of the importance of involving adults, institutions and the community in protecting children. Children were thus able to see how they can play an active part in protecting their own rights.

The event was led by specialist educators, psychologists and children's rights advocates. These experts guided the children through fun and informative activities, making the theme of protecting children's rights more accessible and engaging. There were also opportunities for the children to share their expectations and needs in terms of protection and support.

The Maison d'Accueil des Enfants en Difficulté: a key player in child protection

Created with the aim of providing a safe and caring environment for children in vulnerable situations, the Maison d'Accueil des Enfants en Difficulté works every day to offer a setting conducive to the development and education of children. Recognized by the Togolese government, the center's mission is to ensure the protection and support of children facing various social and family difficulties. Through its partnership with LTPE and EBB, MAED plays an active role in realizing children's rights, contributing to their development in a more favorable environment.

This awareness-raising day was a valuable opportunity to remind the community of the importance of protecting children's rights. By listening to their voices, involving them in the decisions that affect them, and providing them with a safe environment, we are helping to build a more inclusive and supportive society, where every child has an equal chance to realize his or her potential. Respecting children's rights is a priority for a better, more prosperous future.

The Maison d'Accueil des Enfants en Difficulté, with its partners, continues to be fully committed to guaranteeing a future where children's rights are also trampled underfoot.
