On November 17 and 24, 2024, Brussels was the scene of a major round table bringing together media experts, civil society players and government representatives. Organized by the Africa-Europe Youth Group in partnership with the Strategic Communication Unit on Sub-Saharan Africa of the European External Action Service (EEAS), the event highlighted two crucial issues: media independence and the involvement of young people in public life.
Among the distinguished participants was Agbègnigan Yaovi, AYUC's Director General of Communication and Information. In his address, he shared AYUC's initiatives to strengthen press freedom and encourage civic engagement among young people. Highlighting the challenges faced by independent media - censorship, repression and corruption - he stressed their central role in consolidating democracy.
Discussions also focused on the need to train young people and raise their awareness of their role in public life. Participants called for greater collaboration between the media, civil society organizations and state institutions to ensure a free press and greater involvement of young people in decision-making processes.
The event enabled a rich exchange of experiences and perspectives, while identifying obstacles and opportunities for promoting these motivations. An important step in advancing democratic values in a global context.
