Since 1990, elections in Togo, whether legislative or presidential, have always taken place in a climate of fear and violence. From 1990 to 2005, this has been a constant. Every election is experienced as a nightmare by the Togolese people. As the elections approach, Togolese living in the main cities, especially the capital, return to their home towns or villages, where they are not even registered on the electoral roll. Some prefer to leave the country before the elections or just after voting.

These population displacements, which have an impact on the sub-region, affect the living conditions of the population in general, and are a blow to the citizen's right to vote, to the economy, to education, to youth training, and so on.

Many Togolese are stocking up on food and pharmaceutical products in the run-up to the elections. The culture of "win or die" has taken hold, and the elections are taking place in a climate of perceptible tension between the protagonists on the one hand, and between the militants on the other.

The last presidential elections in 2005 saw a massive violation of human rights, with hundreds of victims, according to a UN fact-finding mission and the Koffigoh Commission.

In order to put an end to this state of affairs, the president of the Association des Jeunes Actifs pour le Développement Durable, Mr. MELESUSU Yawo, organized a meeting with the AJADD-Togo national office on Saturday February 10, 2024 in Lomé.

The meeting was an opportunity for them to reaffirm their unwavering commitment to the government for peaceful legislative and regional elections to be held on April 13. For the Association, actions must be taken to ensure that these elections take place in peace and serenity.

"We want to support the government in the fight against pre- and post-election violence. Our actions will focus on awareness-raising sessions for young people in different localities, and we will be bearers of messages of peace," said the Association's president at the end of the meeting.

As a reminder, AJADD- TOGO has always worked to put into practice the policy of peace and stability advocated by the Head of State, His Excellency Mr Faure Essozimna GNASSINGBE.
