A violent fire broke out in the afternoon of Thursday January 9, 2025 at Place Bonké, in the Nyekonakpoé Togbato district of Lomé. The fire, which started in a general merchandise store, caused extensive material damage and panic among local residents.
An uncontrollable situation despite the intervention of the fire department
Alerted in an emergency, the fire department quickly arrived on the scene to try and bring the flames under control. However, their efforts were not enough to contain the blaze. The fire, fanned by flammable materials stored in the store, spread rapidly, making the situation critical.
Colossal material losses
According to initial estimates, the material damage was considerable. The store, containing household appliances, cartons of goods and inflammable products, was almost completely destroyed. Financial losses for the owner are estimated at several million CFA francs.
Witnesses at the scene expressed their dismay. "This is the first time we've seen such an intense fire here. We're powerless to stop it," confided a resident of Nyekonakpoé, still in shock.
An ongoing investigation
The exact cause of the fire is still unknown. However, sources on the scene point to a possible electrical short-circuit in the building. An investigation has been launched by the relevant authorities to determine the precise circumstances of this tragedy.
Calls to reinforce fire-fighting resources
This incident once again highlights the challenges facing the Lomé fire department. Lack of suitable equipment and difficult access to densely populated areas such as Nykonakpoé complicate response operations.
Residents and local authorities are calling for urgent action to reinforce fire-fighting infrastructures and raise awareness of preventive measures.
Meanwhile, the community of Nyekonakpoé Togbato remains in shock, while the damage caused by the fire continues to attract attention.
