In the aftermath of the gigantic fire that swept away 3/4 of the Agoè-Nyivé (Assiyéyé) market, the President of the Republic, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, expressed on Friday December 22, 2023, his solidarity and that of the entire nation with the victims of the disaster, which occurred at a time of intense commercial activity, particularly on the eve of the end-of-year festivities.
This was during an audience granted to a delegation of women traders from the Agoè-Assiyéyé market by the President of the Republic, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, following a devastating fire that broke out on the night of December 21 at the Agoè Assiyéyé market, causing extensive material damage and considerable losses to traders, despite the mobilization of emergency services.
The President of the Republic addressed words of comfort and support to the delegation of shopkeepers, while urging all concerned to calm down and continue their reflections with a view to a swift end to the crisis.
The Head of State also advised shopkeepers to be cautious, given the increased risk of fire during the harmattan period.
On behalf of the victims, Akosiwa Agudze, president of the Agoè-Assiyéyé market traders, thanked the President of the Republic for this gesture of closeness and for his attentiveness to their needs.
"In our grief, the Head of State has not forgotten us. We are comforted to have met him and reassured by the message he delivered to us. He reassured us of his availability. Our hearts are soothed and we call on all our members not to be discouraged. This is a tragic situation, but we are confident that it is not the end. We will find a way out with the support of the authorities," she said.
"We will pass on the President's advice, his message of compassion and his words of encouragement to all the traders of the Agoè-Assiyéyé market. We thank him for his support," added Akossiwa Agudze.
