A shocking tragedy has unfolded in the village of Asrama, located in Togo's Haho prefecture. A 13-year-old girl, the victim of a forced marriage orchestrated by her father, chose to end her life. This tragedy, widely reported on social networks, highlights the urgent need to combat early marriages, which are still practiced in some parts of the country, despite their prohibition under the Children's Code.
Faced with this alarming situation, the Martin Luther King Movement (MMLK) has launched a call for national mobilization. In a press release, the organization's president denounced a flagrant violation of children's fundamental rights, and urged the authorities, human rights organizations and local communities to step up their efforts to eradicate these practices.
The MMLK is planning, among other things, a thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice, reinforced awareness campaigns and prevention mechanisms to protect vulnerable young girls. A national demonstration could also be organized in the coming days to demand justice for the young victim and call for exemplary sanctions.
This tragic tragedy is a reminder of the importance of collective responsibility to protect children from all forms of exploitation and violence. Togo is called upon to redouble its efforts to guarantee a future, respectful of the rights of its young, safe citizens.
